"Pure O2" high-concentration chlorine dioxide (ClO2) liquid product is a substance with strong sterilization and deodorization effects, and it can solve the problems of carcinogen generation and odor, which are the shortcomings of existing chlorine disinfectants, and is being applied to various water treatment fields both domestically and internationally.

The following are examples of chlorine dioxide water applications in domestic and international water purification plants, sewage treatment, and wastewater treatment fields.

1. Water purification plant application cases

- Domestic:

* Initial introduction and use: In 1987, the first chlorine dioxide generator was installed in Korea at Deoksong Water Purification Plant in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, and after the Nakdong River phenol inflow accident in 1991, many water purification plants began using chlorine dioxide liquid.

* Research on reducing disinfection by-products: Some water purification plants are considering introducing chlorine dioxide as a countermeasure to the problem of high levels of disinfection by-products (THMs, etc.) detected during certain periods, such as heavy rain and flooding.

Actual pilot operation results showed some effectiveness in reducing disinfection by-products.

* Manganese removal: There is a case where chlorine dioxide was used to solve the problem of increased manganese and phenol concentration due to changes in water temperature in a water purification plant that uses reservoir freshwater.

* Water quality improvement and safety assurance: As the problem of disinfection by-product generation due to chlorine disinfection has been continuously raised in domestic water purification plants, the possibility of applying chlorine dioxide water as an eco-friendly disinfectant to replace it has been studied and a final report has been published.

Samyuk University and others have conducted research to confirm the possibility of applying chlorine dioxide water products with increased purity to actual water purification plants, and there are successful cases.

- Overseas:

* Historical application: Chlorine dioxide has been used as a disinfectant or oxidizer in many water purification plants since it was first applied in 1944 at the Niagara Falls Water Treatment Plant in New York, USA.

* Disinfection effect and reduction of by-products: Chlorine dioxide is widely used as a disinfectant overseas because it does not produce THMs (trihalomethanes) and does not react with ammonia to create chloramine.

In addition, it is more effective than chlorine and chloramine against pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses, cryptosporidium, and giardia, and has the advantage of oxidizing iron, manganese, and sulfur, and controlling tastes and odors caused by phenol compounds, algae, etc.

* Pretreatment and posttreatment: Chlorine dioxide is used as a pretreatment to reduce the production of THMs, and chlorine is also used as a posttreatment to maintain residual chlorine.

2. Sewage treatment application cases

- Domestic:

* Sewerage and rainwater drain cleaning: Jongno-gu Office is the first local government in the country to use chlorine dioxide water to clean sewers and rainwater drains, thereby achieving odor removal and sterilization effects.

It is known to be about 5 times more effective than bleach in effectively sterilizing the main components of sewage odor such as hydrogen sulfide, food poisoning bacteria, and viruses.

In addition, unlike bleach, it has the advantage of being safe because it does not produce carcinogens or harmful gases.

* Disinfection of effluent from sewage treatment plants: Many sewage treatment plants, including Chungju, Gwacheon, Ulsan, and Gangwon-do, are using liquid chlorine dioxide to treat and disinfect effluent.

* Removal of green algae: Chlorine dioxide water is also effectively used to remove green algae from rivers and golf course hazards. There are cases where chlorine dioxide water was used to remove green algae and improve water quality in Cheonggyecheon, Gonjiam CC, Ariji CC, and Jungwon CC.

- Overseas:

* Chlorine dioxide water is also widely used as a disinfectant and deodorizer in sewage treatment overseas, and considering the general characteristics of chlorine dioxide (strong sterilization power, reduction of disinfection byproducts, etc.),

it is highly likely that it will be used overseas for disinfection of effluent from sewage treatment facilities, odor control, and sludge treatment.

3. Application Cases of Wastewater Treatment Disinfectants and Deodorizers

- Domestic:

* Industrial wastewater treatment: There are experimental results showing that TOC (total organic carbon) was reduced by using chlorine dioxide when treating paper wastewater. In addition, there are cases where chlorine dioxide was added to food wastewater treatment to confirm the effect of removing sludge and odor.

* Livestock odor reduction: Chlorine dioxide water is used to remove odors from livestock facilities such as livestock sheds, pig pens, and chicken pens. It effectively removes the main causes of livestock odors such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and mercaptan, contributing to creating a pleasant livestock environment.

* Other fields:

* Agriculture: Chlorine dioxide water is used to prevent and sterilize crops such as peppers, strawberries, pears, apples, peaches, onions, cabbage, perilla leaves, and citrus fruits, and to remove residual pesticides.

* Food processing: Chlorine dioxide water is used as pre-treatment and post-treatment sterilization water in food processing processes such as garlic and mushrooms.

* Swimming pools, bathhouses, fish farms, etc.: Used for sterilization and water quality management.

* Overcoming the limitations of water treatment agents: There is a research result that killed larvae and eggs by injecting chlorine dioxide water to solve the problem of snail larvae found in tap water.

Overseas:

* Chlorine dioxide is also applied in a wide range of fields overseas, such as various industrial wastewater treatment, cooling tower disinfection, and sterilization and deodorization of hospitals and public health facilities.

In particular, as environmental regulations on existing chlorine disinfectants are strengthened, the use of chlorine dioxide is increasing.

Main features and advantages of chlorine dioxide water:

* Strong sterilization power: It has a sterilization power about 5 times stronger than chlorine, and is effective against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

* Reduction of disinfection byproducts: It does not produce carcinogenic disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs).

* Deodorizing effect: It effectively removes odor-causing substances (hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, phenol, trimethylamine, etc.) by oxidizing them.

* Insensitive to pH changes: Maintains stable sterilizing power regardless of pH changes and ranges.
